加快培育和发展电动汽车产业是我国有效缓解能源和环境压力，推动汽车产业转型升级的战略支撑，为了打好节能减排和环境治理攻坚战，破解产业化难题，促进电动汽车标准化发展，创新政策管理和商业模式，加大对电动汽车的宣传，加快推广应用和试点示范，加快基础设施建设，积极吸引社会资金参与配套产业发展，为汽车企业、电网企业、汽车经销商、电池电桩电站电控企业、和相关企业之间搭建合作交流平台。中国国际贸易促进委员会重庆市委员会、重庆市电动汽车行业协会（筹）等单位于2016年5月在重庆国际博览中心举办首届中国·重庆国际电动汽车产业展。
本届活动以“创新、共享、绿色”为主题，紧紧围绕电动汽车产业发展，以展示展览为主线，力争通过万人试乘试驾、经销商大会、学术发展报告等活动。强化科技创新能力建设，提升产业核心竞争力，促进产业发展，加大电动汽车推广使用力度，积极发展配套产业，建立健全充换电等公共服务平台，完善销售流通渠道，抢占未来汽车产业战略制高点，进一步推动我国由汽车工业大国向汽车工业强国迈进。
